Getting a raise is something that people look forward to each year. However, if you feel you have gone above and beyond what has been required of you, then you might need to take matters into your own hands and ask for a bigger raise. There are ways you can do this so you actually get the raise. There also are ways you should not go about asking for a raise. Sometimes is helps more to know what not to do in this type of situation. The first thing you should not do is expect too much. If you go into the meeting asking for way more than you know you deserve, you actually could leave the meeting not getting anything.
Another thing that should be avoided when you are asking for a raise is asking when your boss is having a bad day. It typically is easy to tell when your boss is stressed out or simply having a bad day. It always is a bad idea to ask for a raise on these days because most bosses say no just because they do not have the time or patience to deal with it right now. This is something that should be avoided at all costs. Regardless of what you think, you are not indispensable. You can be replaced and your boss most likely would rather replace you than deal with an employee who is not dedicated to the company.
